Skills for a Sustainable Skyline Taskforce
Unhooked Communications worked with City of London to help shape a communications strategy to upskill the construction sector to help decarbonise London’s commercial built environment.
The brief
London is lacking a workforce with the skills needed to carry out new, innovative construction methods that would enable the commercial built environment sector to reach its sustainability goals. It’s estimated that over 100,000 people need to be recruited and upskilled to carry out the work required for upcoming projects across Greater London. In response, in 2021 City of London set up the Skills for a Sustainable Skyline Taskforce to bring together stakeholders from across the whole building project lifecycle to work together and address the challenges. Following a joint pitch, City of London appointed Unhooked Communications and On the Tools to develop a strategy that would encourage existing workers in the built environment to upskill with green skills and attract a new and diverse cohort of entrants into green skills roles.
Our solution
Unhooked Communications and On the Tools collaborated in response to the Taskforce’s brief to develop a communications strategy that would meet the Taskforce’s objectives
There were several key touchpoints during the strategy development, including attending a whole Taskforce meeting at Guildhall as part of the briefing process where 100+ members met to share thoughts and insights to help shape the Taskforce’s Evidence Report and Recommendations. Following this, Unhooked and On the Tools hosted an interactive workshop with 13 members of the Taskforce’s committee, including representatives from City of London, CITB, London Property Alliance, BECG, and DiverseCity Surveyors
Led by built environment specialists from the two agencies, the workshop covered a series of exercises and discussion points from audience analysis and key messages to insights into the different audiences the comms campaign would need to reach and engage wit
An in-depth communications strategy was developed. As well as developing the overarching strategy, Unhooked and On the Tools developed a comprehensive suite of tactical ideas including stunts, events, digital tools, a press office campaign, influencer activity and more. Following feedback and discussions with the Taskforce this strategy was refined with the most impactful tactics prioritised and additional audiences incorporated
The results
The comms strategy has now been agreed by the whole Taskforce and sub-groups have been set up to own each key element. Pre-launch activity is now underway with the launch of the campaign planned for 2024.
