Home improvement trends 2025

Our latest research as part of our Homes Unhooked 2025 report shows one in five UK homeowners want to move house but can’t afford to – up from 13% in 2023. Instead, they’re choosing to invest in their current homes.

And this shift is creating big opportunities for building materials manufacturers, suppliers and retailers.

Top home improvement plans for 2025 and 2026 include:

  • Decorating (31%)
  • Landscaping (21%)
  • New flooring (12%)
  • New bathrooms (11%)
  • New kitchens (11%)
  • Home offices (9%)
  • Home gyms (9%)
  • Larger projects like garage conversions, extensions and loft conversions (7%-5%)

Motivations for home improvement plans 2025

Motivations go beyond being unable to move house – people are also planning home improvements to enhance their wellbeing and comfort (23%), make better use of their existing space (23%), repairing broken fixtures and fittings (17%) and improving energy efficiency (9%).

So although the research shows people are spending on their homes, they’re doing so carefully.

What will influence buying decisions for the home improvement market in 2025?

Our data shows that price is the most important factor influencing purchases for the home, but trust, quality and seeing products in real life are also key. In fact, 61% want to view materials and products in-store, and over a third want advice from experts before they buy.

Businesses need to make sure that their content and customer experiences work together across multiple touchpoints, from digital to in-store.

If you want more insights into these trends and what they mean for your PR and marketing strategy, the full Homes Unhooked report is available now.
